What to Expect During Your Denture Repair Appointment?

What to Expect During Your Denture Repair Appointment?

Regardless of how much you take care of your beloved dentures, damage or changes in their fit may occur along the way. In these times, denture repair becomes the way to cure your discomfort, improve the fit and make the dentures get back to their original state. But booking your first denture repair appointment can get you this overwhelming feeling, especially, if you don’t know exactly what you’re getting into and what you should expect. However, there’s good news! We have curated this blog to answer all your questions related to that first appointment. We want to make you aware of the procedure that will take place along with other things that help you get through it seamlessly.

When do you need your dentures repaired?

You should get your denture repaired if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Loose or ill-fitting denture
  • Cracks or fractures
  • Broken or missing teeth
  • Gum irritation or soreness
  • Changes in fit.

What does a denture appointment look like?

In the course of your dental repair appointment, first, make sure you have all the necessary documents or information about your denture. Taking time to set expectations appropriately and knowing how long it will take can contribute to avoiding worries. During your appointment, your dentist will examine the fit and function of your dentures to identify the specific areas of concern. Checking for damage is important in deciding what repair processes are needed. A discussion will take place about the options available for repairing your dentures. Below are the denture appointment steps:

  • Realigning the broken parts of the denture

Adjusting your fractured denture involves realigning the broken parts. If the dentures are split in half, denture adhesives (such as powders or pastes used to keep dentures secure) are used. The dental adhesive is applied to both the inner and outer surfaces of the dentures.

  • Ensuring the stability and proper positioning of the dentures

Naturally, the immediate action involves securing the repaired dentures in place. After realigning, the usual method will involve utilising a tool called a tongue blade. This tongue blade gets divided into two halves to form two wooden splints. Each splint is then affixed to the occlusal surface of the denture. This setup forms a “bridge” that securely maintains all the parts of the denture in position for the following procedures.

  • Making the impression cast

After the denture becomes stable, a needful amount of plaster is added to the tissue side of your fracture. To improve the all-over quality of the impression cast, the remaining plaster is placed on a sturdy surface like wood or glass, and then the denture is carefully positioned into the plaster. Once the plaster has hardened after approx. 10-20 minutes, any wooden supports used on the biting surfaces are taken out.

  • Setting up your impression cast for the denture

This process involves properly removing the dentures from the plaster set. This step holds an important place because any breakage in the plaster, at this stage, will require starting the process anew. If the removal is done well, the cast is then trimmed carefully using a model trimmer and further adjusted with a lab knife to ensure a secure fit for your dentures. After that, any residue on the dentures is removed using an acrylic bur until there’s a gap of 1-2 millimetres between them.

  • Preparation and fixation of dentures

The final step of your denture appointment! A liquid mould that works like a filling is poured in over the cavities of the denture impression so that the pores of the cavities are not exposed outside. Then, there is a cleaning process to remove any accumulated debris on the dentures. After this, the dried dentures go back to the impression pour cast. The liquid monomer is poured along the cracks and then the powder polymer layers overlap in gentle movements to ensure a strong bond. After that, the liquid and powdery monomers are mixed from both the lingual and labial parts of the denture and paraffin liquid wax is applied.

The setup is left until the acrylic reaches a dough-like consistency before it gets immersed in warm water. Following the process in which the acrylic hardens, the denture is removed from the cast. Lastly, the dentures get polished and scrupulously examined to make sure the final denture has a smooth contour, with no porosity and sharp ridges.

Conclusion
